Special Programming on KHKE

Know the Score

The International Saxophone Quartet will begin our program in this broadcast coming from the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol building in Iowa City. Performers in this extraordinary ensemble hail from France, Canada, Japan and the USA and are much-admired for their interesting repertoire. Also joining us will be composer Joseph Dangerfield who will introduce and share recorded excerpts of his Cello Concertino that was recently performed both here in Iowa and in Moscow. And to put a sweet touch on the evening, Iowa City restaurateur and slow food enthusiast Kurt Friese will join us to talk about his new book, "A Cook's Journey: Slow Food in the Heartland." Join us at the Old Capitol building or listen live on Iowa Public Radio Classical, Friday, October 10 at 5 PM.

Live Know the Score shows are free and open to the public, broadcast live on KSUI, KHKE and KUNZ, and rebroadcast on all stations of the IPR Classical network the following morning at 10 a.m.

Symphonies of Iowa

Iowa Public Radio proudly announces the "Symphonies of Iowa" series, showcasing the Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphonies. The series premiered with a Des Moines Symphony gala concert celebrating its 70 years. The concert featured Joshua Bell performing Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony also joins the line-up with world-class cellist Matt Haimovitz performing Barber's Concerto for Cello. Flutist extraordinaire Jeffrey Khaner sparkles along with the Cedar Rapids Symphony in a work written for him, the Chesky Flute Concerto. The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra features violinist and composer Mark O'Connor. Other guest stars appearing in the broadcasts include Midori, Christopher O'Riley, and Alexander Solomon.

Each "Symphonies of Iowa" program will be broadcast on Mondays at 8 PM, and repeated the following Saturdays at 10 AM or Friday nights at 8 PM. Dates and times are subject to change.
